to the rescue

American City Wear maxi, Ross
necklace, Forever 21

I don't wear my maxi dresses enough, so I was excited to wear one to work for the first time on Thursday. It was surprisingly comfortable! I considered wearing my new mint necklace but decided to go for a simpler look this time around.
Erin talked about the magic of camisoles recently. I'd like to add that I've found a basic sports bra invaluable for making outfits work-appropriate. Most of the time, I wear camisoles to deal with too-low necklines or gaping armholes. Wearing a sports bra provides the same kind of coverage but eliminates the sweaty layer around my torso, which makes warm days in a non-air-conditioned workplace more bearable. The only problem is that some of my sports bras are a bit tattered for wearing under work clothes - so now I'm on the hunt for some inexpensive cotton ones.

  1. Sports bras are a genius idea! During Tennessee summers, I want as little as possible touching me!

  2. Amber - I don't know why I haven't thought of it before! It really makes a difference.

I looked for some inexpensive cotton sports bras at Ross the other week but they didn't have much in my size.

  3. THAT. COLOR. oh god it's just perfect. I see this and am so sad I am in Sweden...(maxis become impossible at about mid-august) but you look gorgeous in this! And it makes you look super tall too, from the pic anyway.

I have gigantic boobs so sports bras are just entirely uncomfortable for me. I don't know exactly what it is, but they just smash and hold and my shoulders ache after half an hour. :(

  4. Yay for comfy maxi dresses! I use the inexpensive bandeaus they sell at junior clothing places, as well. I get ones with padding, since they serve the same function as a bra for me. And so. very. comfortable. :D

  5. Aya - I'll have to give bandeaus another try. I had one, but I ended up ditching it because it would surely but slowly creep down over the course of the day ...

  6. I don't know if I used the correct term, but the ones I own have straps. They look more or less like this: http://www.carnelianboutique.com/products-page/allproducts/bandeau-straps-padded-black/

  7. Thanks! I am modestly endowed, so fortunately I don't find sports bras uncomfortable - although they can have a pronounced flattening effect. : \

  8. Ah, the problems of bosomy vixens. ;) Those compression bras don't sound fun at all.

  10. What about sporting goods stores? My local Academy Sports had their brand of sports bras on sale for something like $4 or $5 recently. They offer no workout support whatsoever, but they'd be great to use in this case, especially since they come in all sorts of colors and patterns (I did get a neon green one with white polka dots...now I'm trying to decide if I can layer it!).

  15. Kimmie - I have the same pancake issue, but I think sizing up would help!

  16. Thank you, Nancy! I've always avoided green, but I'm making up for lost time now. :)

  17. Ah, I see. I thought you meant those soft strapless ones that have no structure - I know people wear 'em, just not sure how they keep them up all day. I'll have to check out some juniors stores and see what I can find! I'll take any excuse to browse the juniors' section ... ;)

  18. We have a Sports Authority, but I find even their sale stuff to be pretty expensive. I'll have to think about whether there are other sporting goods stores that would yield some cheap bras ...
Would love to see if you figure out a way to layer your neon green polka-dotted one! :)
