just the right words

I loved Roald Dahl's work as a kid. I read "The Witches" many many times, and just about every other book of his I could get a hold of. As a teacher, I enjoyed reading "Matilda" to my 4th-grade class. I probably read "The Twits," but it wasn't on my perennial re-reading list, which may explain why I couldn't identify the source of this quote without Google's help. :)

  1. Roald Dahl wrote such lovely/dark stuff. Have you read his adult short stories (as in written for grownups, not as in pervy), or his autobiographical novels? Fantastic! (Even though the man was a dirty Anti-Semitic IRL.)

  3. Erin - I haven't read his autobiographical novels or adult short stories. I'll have to look them up sometime. It always fascinates me that someone can write the most wonderful books but have these awful prejudices ... you'd think they'd leak into his work somehow, but I never knew he was anti-Semitic.

  4. Carol - he has such a great writing style and he has a gift for tapping into themes and thoughts that kids identify with. :)
