the case of the baffling shorts

Me (wearing the shorts shown below): What do you think?
Mr.: Those are pajamas for wearing at home, right?
Me: Uhh ... no. They're shorts, see?
Mr.: I don't really get what you'd wear them with.
Me: Um ... maybe a tee. They're just fun shorts for summertime. It's kind of neat because they look a little like a skirt.
Mr.: I think you'd need a jacket or something to make it look right.
Me: Well, I'm not wearing them to work, so I don't think I'd need a jacket.
Mr.: Hmm (clearly perplexed).

The Mr. obviously voted for me to return these, but I figured I needed a second opinion. I've been looking for a fun pair of shorts for summer. I'm looking for something that's figure-flattering and not super-short. I've tried on some of those longer-length Bermuda style shorts, but  I think that anything fitted in the hips and thighs emphasizes this area (a part of me that, in my opinion, doesn't need emphasis), so I figured that something flowy might work better.
These shorts fit the bill in that regard. I also like the small-scale print, color, and that it seems easy to pair with other things in my closet. I'm just not sure if this is the best shape for me, particularly with the pleats.
If you feel like it, leave me some honest feedback below and help me decide whether these are keepers. Or, you can just vote no on the basis that I've already broken my shopping ban once, and really should follow through on upholding my ban. :)

I love them from the side, I like them less from the front. I think the concept is good (I love a flow-y short myself) but they're not quite right. I vote return.

  7. Haha, sounds like a conversation I'd have with my husband! :D I think they're really cute. I do agree with Gracey that they look different from the front than from the side... but I think in the last photo they work really well with a belt. I vote keep :)

  8. I say treat them and wear them like you would with a mini skirt because they are flowy and short (though safer, haha) - you've obviously already shown there is a ton of stuff you can pair these shorts with, so I say keep!

  10. Thanks, Lisa - I agree that they're just as fun as a mini skirt, without the worry about a possible wardrobe malfunction. :)

  12. Shorts can be so problematic! I myself am allergic to pleated shorts and pants, but having said that, I see what you mean about this pair looking more like a summer skirt, almost like a tulip-shaped skirt. And the print is nice and would go with a lot of things, as you've demonstrated. I think the shape does work for you, as long as you keep your waist very defined, like with a belt so the shape looks intentional. My two cents! :)

  14. Thanks for the thoughtful feedback, Jen! There are so many shorts out there, it's amazing how hard it is to find a good pair. I agree with you on the need for a belt. :)
