Calvin Klein tee, Macy's
Miss Sophisticates by Pendleton skirt, thrifted
belt, Old Navy
I'm starting to think that pleated skirts are like heels ... they look great on others, but just don't work for me.
I want to like this outfit more than I really do. But the pleats seem to make my hips look bigger, and the colors are not the ones I usually gravitate to.
At this point, I'm ready to toss this top into my donations bag - as pretty as it is, I just don't think it's me. The skirt is a recent thrift find, so I'm not quite ready to let it go. I'm thinking about trying to pair it with a graphic tee, a red short-sleeve sweater, or even a navy buttondown knotted at the waist.
Constructive feedback welcome - how would you wear this skirt?
I always felt the same way about pleated skirts, they either looked dowdy or too "Schoolgirl" on me. But it's all about finding the shape of the skirt that you like and that fits for you. (I like me pleated skirts to sit at my natural waist and I like them about knee length or shorter, I'm pretty short so that helps me look a little bit taller.) I think this skirt is pretty gorgeous on you, it really doesn't make your hips look big at all, but shows off your tiny waist! I think a graphic tee would be fun with this, maybe tucked in or tied so there's still shape? And if you're still not happy, maybe adjusting the length might make you like it more. (The midi length does look lovely on you.)
ReplyDeleteAgh, I totally forgot to mention how pretty your hair looks! It's got such a beautiful wave to it and it really frames and shows off your pretty face!
ReplyDeleteI actually like the print of the skirt but I wonder if you could DIY shorten it? or trying it with a darker top?

Kat - I think hemming is a good suggestion. So is a darker top - I'll have to try out both ideas. :)
ReplyDeleteKatie - thanks for the thoughtful feedback. :) I will definitely try it with a graphic tee! Playing with the length is another good idea. I'm short, so I feel like this length makes me look a bit stumpy. I actually have another pleated skirt - purple, midi length - that I have similar problems styling. I think one of them will have a date with the sewing machine once winter break starts! :)
ReplyDeleteI have a few pieces like that--I have a hard time figuring out how to style and though they are pretty, may just not be me. I'm looking forward to see how else you style the skirt!
