During my blog reading lately, I've really been admiring the bright lips other bloggers have been wearing. I decided to give it a try on Saturday night. Below I'm wearing lipstick from Nuance (Salma Hayek's new cosmetic line) in Paprika.
The Mr. called it "striking," but he wasn't sure if he liked it. I felt the same way -- every time I looked in the mirror, all I saw was my very bright mouth.
My Saturday night photos don't convey how bright the lipstick appeared (I did blot it heavily and then apply Burt's Bee's Red Dahlia tinted lip balm over it). See the photos below for a better idea of the color:

I also realized that bright lipstick is an entirely different creature from lip glosses or tinted lip balms -- careful, precise application is a must. I didn't notice any feathering or bleeding, but I wasn't wearing it for very long. Do you use a lip liner? A lip brush to apply? And any tips on how to wear a bright lipstick? (I kept my eye makeup neutral here -- not that you can tell from the photos. Related question: how do you get your makeup to show up in photos?) Lastly, do you prefer a bright lip with certain types of outfits or colors? If you have advice, I'd love to hear it. :)
Happy Tuesday!
I think that color looks good on you. I often use a lip stain when I want more color. It lasts for hours, and you can get them in a precise applicator which makes it easy to use. Then, you can still put balm/gloss on top and smooch your sweetie without getting the color on him (:

I have always been way into fashion, but I always do the same old with make up. I need to try some new things :) I love lipstick and do always wear a liner, it looks way better I think. I really like this color! May need to try it.

Looks so pretty Carrie! I LOVE a bright lipstick. Usually if I'm wearing a more casual outfit, I'll hold back, or do a paler color/just gloss - but if I'm dressing up to go out, I love a nice bright pink, and throw some gloss over it :)

The Other Side of Gray
Thank you! I'll have to look into trying a lip stain. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Emily! I will definitely try it with a liner. If you try this color, I'd love to see how it looks on you. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip, Annie! :) I agree - it seems to go better with a more dressed-up look. :)
ReplyDeleteI love that you're trying out different make-up. I don't have any tips for you because I don't really wear any, but I'm excited to see your progress.
ReplyDeleteAnd I actually think that lipstick looks fabulous on you. That being said, on the rare days I do wear a bright lip, it's all I can see too. You'll get used to it though.
You look great with the red lips. My only tip for wearing bright lips is to keep eye makeup to a minimum. I love using lipstick as an accessory. It can really amp up an outfit.

I think the lipstick looks great!
ReplyDeleteAs far as your photo question- I think make-up photographs much lighter. You said all you saw when you looked in the mirror were bright lips, but in the picture it's not overbearing at all. If I remember before I take pics I put on dark lipstick and extra blush because what I wear for day to day would look too washed out on camera.
That lipstick color looks really good on you!
ReplyDeleteIt just takes some getting used to wear bright lip colors. I still struggle with it every now and again. I just wear it when the mood strikes me.
I like it most with dark colors, as it serves as a pop of color :)

I heard revlon lip butters are moisturising and give a good pop of color! Over here they are major expensive but over there I think it may be half our price :) Love playing with make up :) Color looks great on you :) I agree bright lips but neutral eyes :)
ReplyDeleteI really like that color on you! The first time I started wearing lipstick I felt weird too and every time I saw myself in the mirror I thought I looked like a clown. Trust me, it's not loud at all and complements your skin well! It will just take some getting used to.
ReplyDeleteI don't wear lipstick a lot, but no I do not use lip liner (actually HATE the stuff) and I just put it on without a brush.
Thanks for the tips and encouragement, Megan! :)
ReplyDeleteKat - I've seen so many bloggers talking about lip butters. I just picked one up this week because the drugstore was having a sale ... I'm looking forward to trying it out. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gracie! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Wren! Minimal eye makeup is a good suggestion. :)
ReplyDeleteGood points, Katie! Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kassi! I like the idea of pairing it with dark colors. :)
ReplyDeleteI like the color of that lipstick, looks great on your lips too. And I think you applied it really well. Personally I rarely apply colored lipstick, reason being I have uneven lip contours and I am not good at outlining with the lip pencil. So I always use lip gloss to give a fuller looking lips ;-)

You look lovely in that lip color! I personally am super lazy about makeup, so when I do wear lip colors, I never wear lipstick because of the whole lip liner/feathering issue. I use heavily pigmented lip balms (like Burt's Bees) or lip glosses that are not that sticky (it's a trial to find!). Jouer makes a great lip gloss.
ReplyDeleteHow much did you pay? Because they sell them in Aus for a whopping $22!!! :(
ReplyDeleteThanks, Erin! I I think I am more of a lip gloss/tinted lip balm girl myself, but I thought I'd try something different. I'll have to check out that Jouer gloss!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mongs! I think lip gloss looks good on everyone and it's so easy to apply. :)
ReplyDeleteWOW! :O Thatʻs crazy. Hmm, I think CVS was offering 40% off all Revlon products, so I picked mine up for between $5 and $6 ... I didnʻt know you folks had such crazy markups!
ReplyDeleteThe first time you put on bright lipstick it can definitely feel overwhelming! It does take some getting used to but I think you'll enjoy how your photos turn out with it on. My suggestion is to always apply lipliner in your natural lip colour to help you prep the shade.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion, Bessie! I took a look at the lipliners, wasnʻt sure how to pick a color -- but something that matches my lips makes sense. :)
ReplyDeleteWow I miss those sales! thats why i loaded up when I went to the US!
ReplyDeleteI would never call this a strike out! But I remember how I felt the first time I wore a super bright coral - I felt like the person in the mirror was someone else...super weird! It just takes some getting used to, and you look great :)

So What If I Like Pretty Things
That is a gorgeous lip color! I think you could rock it bright without blotting, but that's just my opinion : ) I don't usually do too bright, unless I'm dressed up, but some girls do the casual bright color look really well, I'm just not one of them ; )
ReplyDeleteThanks, Marie! I'm excited to wear it more and get used to the look. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenn. I will definitely try the color without blotting. And I like the idea of a bright lip with a casual look -- I think it adds some fun and polish. :)
ReplyDeletethe brightness is PERFECT!

That's such a pretty color on you!
ReplyDeleteThank you, dotty. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! :)
ReplyDeleteOh I love this post! Bloggers influenced me to try out the bright lipstick, too :) I've found that it really helps to have your lips moisturized first... I always put on some chapstick before I apply! I also think it's important to find a REALLY good lipstick with great consistency. I'm still on the hunt!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kristine! Applying chapstick beforehand is a great idea. I hope you share when you find your perfect lipstick! :)
